Eddy Karnieli, MD
Married with 3 children and 8 grandchildren, graduated at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Professor of Medicine (Emeritus), Co-Founder of Schneur Diabetes Research Center and Dr. Joel Hamburger Chair of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at the Technion.
Previous positions: Past Director, Inst. Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism. Rambam Medical Center; Past Chairperson, Galil Center for Telemedicine, Medical Informatics and Personalized Medicine, RB Rappaport Faculty of Medicine – Technion. I also served as President of Israel Diabetes Association (1988-1992) and President of Israel Endocrine Society (2012-2016).
Research: Over the last 40 years my main research interest has been to investigate the mechanism(s) of insulin stimulatory effect on glucose transport and glucose transporters (GLUT) at the cellular and molecular levels in physiological and pathophysiological states like diabetes, obesity and insulin resistance. Using primary adipose cells, muscle tissue samples and/or cardiac muscle tissue biopsies obtained from human and animal models, we studied transcriptional regulation of the GLUT4 gene in diabetes and obesity in humans and animal models. Recently, we focus on muscle engineering as potential modality for type 2 diabetes therapy.
